With Summer on the way, it’s a good time to consider ways to conserve water, using less water can save you money and reduce energy use.
Unlike other utilities, you can’t change your water provider, however, water companies including South East Water offer a range of support tariffs and payment schemes if you are having difficulty paying your water bill.
Tips on saving water in the home:
Consider a water meter
Many households still pay a fixed charge based on the size of the house. However, if you are under-occupying your home or don’t use a lot of water, you may benefit from having a water meter fitted. If you are thinking about switching, try out the Consumer Council for Water’s free water meter calculator first to see what you could save.
Take a shorter shower
The average bath uses 80 litres and even the average shower can use up to 60 litres. Try timing yourself and keeping showers to less than four minutes. Try reducing the heat. This will save energy on heating water and you’ll be less inclined to stay in for too long! To help we have some four-minute timers to give away, see below for details.
Turn the tap off when brushing your teeth
According to South East Water a family of four could save up to £36 on metered water bills per year!
Load up your machines
Fully load your washing machine and dishwasher every time you use them.
Water your garden with a watering can
A hosepipe uses 1,000 litres of water an hour. Mulching your plants (with bark chippings, heavy compost or straw) and watering in the early morning and late afternoon will reduce evaporation and also save water.
Only flush the toilet when you have to
About one-third of the water we use is flushed down the toilet. If you have a dual-flush cistern, use the light flush whenever possible. If you’ve got an old cistern, try a cistern displacement device in your toilet cistern to reduce the volume of water used in each flush. We have some of these to giveaway (see below for details) or you can get one from your water provider.
To help you save water we are giving away 30 four-minute shower timers and Littlefoot Flush Bags. These will be given away to the first 30 tenants who request them. To request yours, please complete this form:
